How Marie Kondo Uses Gratitude to Flip the Script on Decluttering

This week, we’re continuing to focus on decluttering to get you set up for a successful 2019. Follow along as we showcase some highlights from Marie Kondo’s “KonMari” method of cleaning and organizing.

Before getting started sorting through another home’s mess, Marie Kondo does something a little unconventional. She kneels down to the floor, closes her eyes, and takes a moment to “introduce herself to the house” she’s about to help organize. This is just one of the out-of-the-box components of Marie Kondo’s “KonMari” cleaning method, as seen on the new Netflix show Tidying Up. While the show was just released, Marie Kondo is already an accomplished best-selling author and home organization queen with a bit of a cult following. She uses her unique method of tidying as a way to “spark joy” in people’s lives. Ultimately, Marie seeks to change the act of cleaning from a grueling task to a celebrated activity a family can participate in together.

Gratitude is emphasized within many of Marie’s cleaning tips and tricks. From the moment she first “introduces” herself to the home, Marie teaches dwellers to practice gratitude for what their house provides to them—a place to rest, a place to eat, a place to share with loved ones. Marie not only encourages gratitude towards the house you call home; her method involves picking up each item you’re considering parting ways with and assessing whether or not it “sparks joy” for you. If the answer is no, you’ll know it’s time to get rid of it. Instead of tossing out unwanted items mindlessly, Marie recommends you thank each item for what it’s given you before throwing it in the “Donate” box. Even unworn clothing can be “thanked” for teaching you a lesson—If you’re parting ways with a shirt you bought two years ago but never put on, you now know not to repurchase that kind of shirt.

Marie’s method helps to switch the perspective many people feel towards the process of cleaning and decluttering. By practicing gratitude, people begin to feel more inspired and motivated to care for their belongings. When every item in your home “sparks joy,” it deserves it’s own designated spot. Those who struggle with saying goodbye will likely feel more comfortable decluttering if they incorporate gratitude into the process, for both their home and belongings, whether they choose to keep them or not.
